Dating a Gamer: A Straightforward Guide

This guide is for anyone who is dating a gamer, or would like to, and would rather understand the hobby than guess at it. It covers showing interest, respecting game time, planning dates and playing together. None of it is complicated, and all of it works better when you treat your partner as an individual first.

  1. Show real interest in what they play

Ask what they are playing right now and what they like about it. You do not need to be good at games, and you do not need to love them. Showing that you care about what they care about is what counts.

  2. Learn a little, and ask the rest

A few basic terms go a long way, and it is fine to ask what something means. Asking is better than guessing, and most gamers enjoy explaining a game they love.

  3. Respect their game time

Some games run on matches or group sessions that cannot easily be paused. Ask when a good time to talk is, and agree on a way to say that something matters. A small effort on both sides avoids a lot of arguments.

  4. Plan dates they would enjoy

Dates do not have to be dinner. You could try a game together at home, visit an arcade, watch a tournament or simply go for a walk after a long session. Pick something you can both enjoy.

  5. Say what you need

If you feel you are not getting enough attention, say so kindly and early. Agree on time together that is protected, and keep the conversation about what you need, not about the game.

  6. Try playing together

Choose something friendly and cooperative, and keep the pressure low. Do not take a loss seriously, and let them show you the parts of the game they love.
